Day 5 Eric and Starving horse update

Nor Cal Equine will be taking legal possession of this horse at 5 p.m. today if the owner does as he said he would. Nor Cal paid for Taylor vet to access the horses condition. One of the vets said "This is one of the worst cases of horse starvation I've seen where the horse is still alive". Taylor vet is going to try and take the horse to it's clinic today at five when the owner signs it over. I want to personally thank Nor Cal Equine for helping this horse.

While waiting for the vets to arrive I walked around talking to neighbors who have been asking what's going on with the horse. They have all been calling animal control for over a month now and seemed to really care about his situation. I told one of them that I needed a picture for my blog and along came Eric. Eager to have his picture taken. Thank you Eric.

Foot Note: the story about this horse on my blog is scattered and a little difficult to understand. I was communicating on another blog and through e-mails to NorCal Equine Rescue. They did acquire possession of the horse who is now named Phoenix. They ran the entire story on their blog http://savethehorse.blogspot.com/2009/05/5-5-09.html The story was also picked up by the Modesto Bee. The articles title is "Former Racehorse Saved From Starving to Death". Published May 17, 2009. Phoenix is recovering and occasionally NorCal Equine Runs updates.
This blog is for my own personal growth as a photographer, however I am also discovering the significance of photographs in our everyday lives. I'm grateful for the ability to post pictures, which then can get others involved and in this case that ability played a major roll in saving a life. In fact without pictures and a place to share them, Phoenix would have died in that field.

  3. Thankyou so much, since 2006 when a horse died in a paddock right near our house i have followed rescue stories throughout the world. Thankyou for at least stepping in before it was too late. Even if he doesnt make it at least people tried and his last hours were filled with the TLC he always deserved. Like Alla (i have attempted to tell her story but i've been turned down. For his sake i hope he lives on because he has the chance. Thankyou again!

Bless you for taking the time and having the heart to step in and act, before it was too late.

  21. Bless you for stopping....I've done that many times for dogs, and a couple of horses - taking a chance on being fired for being late to work, but have never seen such an obvious, horrible case. AC should be prosecuted for being an enabler and not stepping in sooner and seizing this poor boy. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Words are not enough to praise the efforts you put out to save a horse. You listened to your gut and took the time to act upon it even though I am sure you are very busy! May the universe reward you and your efforts...and all the efforts of those that stop and take the time to do the right thing:) There is one happy horse right now because of your thoughtfulness:)

  26. I just wanted to say that it's good to see that people are willing to try and help an abused animal!! I've also rescued a horse from the same situation by offering $300 for him. Most people that were told about my latest horse always asked why I bothered. I never know what to say to that! Especially when it turned out that he was only 2yr's old.
SO I JUST WANTED TO SAY THANK YOU FOR STOPPING!!!

  28. I'm deeply touched by all your thoughts. Not exactly sure what to say except I am so glad Nor Cal Equine stepped up to take possession of him. I'm also looking forward to seeing him happy and in good condition.

  29. I would like to know what county this Animal Control officer was from? I am simply shocked that the horse wasn't seized. I understand they have difficult jobs but this just seems to surpass all common sense that they were monitoring this animal and didn't realize the severity of his situation. Where can I write my letter of complaint?

I was shocked when he told me that it had rained and grass would grow. As if the horse could wait until then. Even more shocked when I told him this horse needed immediate medical help and he told me While raising his voice the he couldn't force this guy to have an unwanted veterinary bill.

  31. mustangboy: Bless your heart. I, obviously, missed this before I asked if the horse was assisted by NorCal.

  32. I have written what I consider to be a very stern letter demanding to know what will happen regarding this Animal Control employee. I do not live in the county and will likely be ignored but I will continue to communicate until I get satisfaction. This employee should be terminated if you ask me - doubt that will happen. I encourage everyone to contact them and tell them how ridiculous this officer's disregard for Phoenix was.
